Introduction of Beijing Massage Hospital

Beijing Massage Hospital established in 1958, affiliated to China Disabled Persons’ Federation, is considered as the cradle and technical resource center of modern blind medical massage in China, and accredited as a Grade Ⅱ Level A traditional Chinese medicine hospital by Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the only designated massage hospital for basic medical insurance in Beijing.

Beijing Massage Hospital located at No. 7 Baochan Hutong, Xicheng District, covering an area of 4,000 m2, maintains the intact Siheyuan, the classical Beijing residence decorated by modern features and old Beijing elements as the main building, being full of traditional Chinese Medicine Culture atmosphere. The hospital has 300 employees at present, including more than 90 blind massage doctors.

After six decades of exploration and practice, the hospital has fully utilized the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine, and gradually formed a business model that combines acupuncture, medicine and physical therapy, with massage therapy being the main approach, which is called the “one diagnosis and multiple treatments” model. It covers over 100 diseases of Internal medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and ENT departments, such as cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, menopausal syndrome, irregular menstruation, constipation, cerebral palsy in children, muscular torticollis in children etc. Featured by Big-outpatient & Small-inpatient Structure, the main business departments include Tuina, Acupuncture, Rehabilitation, Pain, Pre-treatment, Imaging, Inspection, and Pharmacy, serving over 3,000 outpatients daily.

Sticking to the development strategy of Vitalizing the Hospital through Science and Education, Beijing Massage Hospital inherits and carries forward traditional Chinese massage therapy. It organizes several sessions of well-known experts’ academic experience inheritance programs, and carries out inter-institutional, municipal and national-level old Chinese medicine experts’ inheritance work, establishing Wang Youren and Shi Ruihua, the two traditional Chinese medicine inheritance studios of Beijing Chinese Medicine Fire & Torch Inheritance Program, training nearly 100 Chinese medicine heirs. Beijing Massage Hospital has successfully undertaken the 11th, 12th, and 13th Five-Year Key Specialist (Special Disease) Construction Projects of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Additionally, it has presided over several scientific research projects funded by Beijing Natural Science Foundation, Traditional Chinese Medicine Technological Project of Beijing, Beijing Basic-level Traditional Chinese Medicine Team Construction Project etc. The hospital has published hundreds of academic papers in municipal, provincial and national publications, complied over 20 monographs, such as Practical Massage Handbook, Massage Therapeutics, Basic Illustration of Visceral Massage Techniques etc., and released Famous Doctors’ Diagnosis & Treatment Methods, the first set of DVD teaching discs on blind medical massage in China. It complied the Technical Specification of Medical Massage for the Blind, which was jointly printed & distributed by the former Ministry of Health, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the China Disabled Person’s Federation, acting as the professional guiding criteria for nationwide blind therapeutic massage practice. The hospital undertakes the clinical teaching task of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Special Education College of Changchun University, Special Education College of Beijing Union University, and Special Education College of Binzhou Medical College etc., playing a positive role in cultivating brilliant Chinese Medicine talents.

As the national technical resource center for blind therapeutic massage, Beijing Massage Hospital shoulders the standard formulating, technical guidance and personnel training tasks of the national blind medical massage enterprise, cultivating thousands of Chinese massage staffs and professional technicians selected by each municipal and provincial Disabled Persons’ Federation annually. In 2018, the hospital carried out 29 national blind medical massage projects, involving nearly 50 medical massage institutions for blind people in 17 provinces, benefiting more than 1,300 people. To further implement the requirements of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Outline of the 13th Five-Year Plan for Accelerating the Disabled Persons’ Well-off Process (No. 47, [2016] National Released), highlighting its master-apprentice education advantages, promoting the service capacity building and backbone-talents team construction of the blind medical massage, in October 2018, the hospital launched a pilot project on academic experience inheritance of renowned veteran Chinese medicine specialists among national blind medical massage institutions, approved by China’s Disabled Persons’ Federation.

Beijing Massage Hospital continuously strengthens international exchanges and cooperation, actively showing the development of China’s Blind Medical Massage Enterprise, broadcasting traditional Chinese Medicine culture, with Switzerland, Ireland, Japan, Croatia and other countries, to promote the academic exchange and technical cooperation. The hospital positively shoulders social responsibilities, holding over 400 lectures, benefiting more than 10,000 citizens, to widespread medical knowledge and fully illustrate the broad and profound of the blind medical massage and the brilliant image of the blind doctors, finally making contributions to the Healthy China Strategy.

The Extension Project of Beijing Massage Hospital started in 2006 and has been included in the key investment projects of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan and the Twelfth Five-Year Plan for the disabled in China. In 2013, it was approved to land on No. 36 Guangqu Road, Chaoyang District, and officially broke ground in May 2018. After extension, the hospital will become a Grade Ⅲ Level A professional Chinese medicine Hospital, operating in one-hospital-two-address model, arranged with 300 beds, covering an area of 42825.8 m2 in total. The new hospital engaged in medical treatment, scientific research and education functions, will better serve China’s disabled persons’ industry and blind medical enterprise, satisfying citizens’ medical needs, prompting the development of traditional Chinese medicine, and boosting the implement of Healthy China Strategy.
