Introduction of Beijing Massage Hospital

Beijing Massage Hospital, established in 1958, is considered as the cradle and resource center of modern blind therapeutic massage in China. The hospital is affiliated to China Disabled Person’s Federation, and accredited as a professional Chinese traditional medicine hospital by Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the only designated massage hospital for basic medical insurance in Beijing. The hospital occupies a land area of 3,000 ㎡ and a floor plan of 4,000 ㎡, and has employed a staff of more than 260 persons.
  Beijing Massage Hospital focuses on the treatment of functional diseases. It has gradually formed a special treatment model in the past decades, with the manipulation treatment taking the dominant position, and a variety of other treatment measures playing a supporting role. This model has achieved good effects in treating dozens of diseases, such as cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, scapulohumeral periarthritis, menopausal syndrome, irregular menstruation, constipation, pediatric cerebral palsy, and infantile myogenic torticollis. Serving more than 2,400 outpatients daily, the hospital has inpatient department and other specialized departments, such as Massage Department, Acupuncture and Moxibustion Department, Physiotherapy Department, X-ray Department, Laboratory Department, and Pharmacy. It has established Special Consultation Clinic, which is set up based on the concept of preventive treatment of diseases, and it provides quality and safe services for people who are in a sub-healthy situation. Sticking to its key development strategy of “vitalizing the hospital with education & science”, Beijing Massage Hospital carries out massage training regularly, and organizes scientific research & academic activities on a large scale. It has achieved impressive results in scientific research, teaching and cultivating talents, etc. Beijing Massage Hospital has currently undertaken the task of teaching via clinical practice for Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Special Education College of Changchun University, Special Education College of Beijing Union University and Beijing School for the Blind. It has trained a large number of excellent professionals of Chinese traditional medicine and massage. In order to promote academic research, inheritance & development of Chinese massage and train qualified professionals accordingly, Beijing Massage Hospital has successively organized four experience-inheritance programs to study and inherit experiences accumulated by five senior experts over about half a century. Additionally, Beijing Massage Hospital has undertaken scientific research projects funded by Beijing Natural Science Foundation, Traditional Chinese Medicine Technological Project of Beijing, etc. It has secured a key special hospital (special disease) construction project for the 11th Five-Year Plan Period from the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Beijing Massage Hospital has successively compiled over 20 works like Massage Therapy Study, Chinese Massage Collection, Chinese Ways to Retain Youthful Looks, Massage Direction, etc. It has published “Famous Doctors’ Diagnosis & Treatment Methods”, the first set of DVD teaching discs on blind therapeutic massage in China.
  As a national resource center for blind therapeutic massage, Beijing Massage Hospital undertakes standard formulating, technical guidance and personnel training for similar institutions nationwide. In 2010, its Standard on Performance of Blind Therapeutic Massage was jointly printed & distributed by the Ministry of Health, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the China Disabled Person’s Federation. This handbook acts as the guiding criteria for nationwide blind therapeutic massage practice. Beijing Massage Hospital holds annual training classes for managers and head directors of nationwide massage hospitals in cooperation with the China Blind Massage Guiding Center, and classes for nationwide massage therapists in collaboration with Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Association annually. The hospital offers advanced study opportunities for massage therapists from all around China. It also holds massage training classes for both domestic and overseas massage amateurs. On average, it trains more than 1,000 massage practitioners at different levels every year.
  Beijing Massage Hospital actively participates in domestic and overseas exchange and cooperation. In 2002, the hospital held the Sino-US Manual Therapy Symposium,which was the first of its kind in China. It has conducted academic and technological exchanges and cooperation with counterparts from many countries like Switzerland, Ireland, Japan, etc. In 2008, the China Massage Development Forum sponsored by Beijing Massage Hospital was participated by 46 domestic medical organizations, to academically exchange knowledge and views on massage foundation and clinic development. In 2010, the 1st Beijing Forum on Domestic & Overseas Spinal Column Treating Technique hosted by Beijing Massage Hospital has promoted the internationalization process of Chinese traditional and modern spinal column treating technique.
  Beijing Massage Hospital is the first institution in China to provide opportunities for persons with visual impairment to work in the field of therapeutic massage, and serve as a cradle of domestic modern therapeutic massage of the blind. It has provided a platform for persons with disabilities to exhibit their spirit of self-dependence and self-strengthening. It has also achieved very positive outcomes in the employment and social security of people with visual impairment in China.
